Episode 84: Untangling Anxious Thought With Dan Arscott

Dan Arscott is our first ALPOM Podcast follow-up. We first met Dan at 19 as he was beginning to see more about this thing called anxiety.

Back then he was just finishing up sixth-form college and now we catch up with him two years later at the age of 21 to see how life has continued to unfold for him – and how his understanding of the principles has helped.

If you missed the first episode we did together, you can find it here.

I particularly loved his metaphor of how thought is like the natural flow of traffic – instead of the car-crash of thought that seems to show up at the height of an anxious moment.

How do you untangle thought? Listen and find out:)

It’s The Little Things

It’s The Little Things

This post is by our guest blogger and A Little Peace of Mind graduate, Amie Joof.

Here Amie shares her story of change – you can find all the posts in this series here: https://alittlepeaceofmind.co.uk/amie

The changes that have been made in my life due to this understanding (well the ones I tend to focus on) are quite big to me, like going for my job interview and going back to work. Leaving the house and driving hours to go places. Not needing medication to function.

However, what I noticed today is that there are little things all around me too that have shifted and that I am so grateful for. Things that I probably haven’t even given a second thought before.

Today, I had my headphones in, pondering around the house listening to Nicola Bird and Dr Aaron Turner. When my 12 year old nephew nudged me and said “What’s that you’re listening to, is that the lady that cured you?” I immediately let out a little laugh which annoyed him! But then I said “No, I’m sorry, go on, explain what you mean” and after a few eye rolls at me he said “Well, you know, you stay in the bath for agesssss again now like you used to, because before you always used to be really quick and nanny would have to wait for you, and you’re just not scared to go out anymore, and it’s since you listened to that lady so did she cure you?”

I didn’t even know what to say to him. I thought it was so adorable that he had noticed when I thought at least 99% of his thoughts were to do with Fortnite and PS4….but he did.

I spent ages thinking about what he said about my baths and it is so true. I have absolutely no thinking about running a nice bath and laying back in it for as long as I want to and this isn’t something I would class as an achievement but actually, it is.

Any shift we see in our lives from the smallest to the biggest is a huge achievement and the little things aren’t little to us at all, it’s a step closer to us having our freedom back.
